Applied Learning Modules (ApLM)

A practice-based module that exposes students to a variety of business disciplines including economics, cost and financial management, marketing, human resource management, business operations, IT and entrepreneurial concepts.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in starting a business
• want to learn the fundamentals of business such as economics, marketing and financial management 
• enjoy idea generation and problem-solving 

What to expect

Students will learn the principles of business and get to start and manage a simple business event. In addition, students will get to participate in field trips and/or networking sessions where they will meet successful entrepreneurs and learn from their success stories.

A foundational module that covers key e-Business-related IT concepts and vocabulary in areas such as Competitive Advantages, the Internet, security, ethics and intellectual property rights.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• have an e-business idea they want to bring to the next level
• are already marketing on online platforms such as Carousell but want to create a greater impact

What to expect

Students will discover how companies and individuals successfully adapt to rapid industry changes and “Black Swan” events like the Covid-19 pandemic by transitioning operations online. Students will gain hands-on experience running an e-Business themselves and will pick up the technological knowledge needed to do so through exclusive practical sessions guided by our experienced trainers. They will document their learning journey through a blog and leave with their own electronic portfolio.

A module that exposes students to the exciting world of marketing.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• want to explore the trends and innovations in digital marketing
• are seeking a career and education opportunities in marketing

What to expect

​Students will learn basic principles of marketing and discover for themselves how these are applied in the real world. They will get to critique the effectiveness of the marketing of products and services and uncover for themselves the best marketing practices as well as the pitfalls to avoid. Case studies will bring to life how the industry adapted to the Covid-19 pandemic and the importance of marketing in an ever-changing environment.

A module that provides students valuable insights into social challenges in Singapore and around the world, including relative poverty, integration of persons with disabilities into society, environmental issues and problems facing the elderly as well as migrant workers. This course challenges students to exercise critical thinking to address these issues through social innovations.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• seek to make a difference in society through their choice of career
• want to make a contribution to society through the solving of pervasive social and environmental problems

What to expect

Students will gain exposure to a range of social issues through simulation exercises, lectures, activities, discussions and reflections; and brainstorm solutions to the social issues they encounter. Our field trips include a visit to Dialogue in the Dark, where students will get to understand first-hand what persons with visual disabilities experience, and Dialogue with Time, a learning journey with the elderly at the Science Centre. The module culminates with a group presentation and valuable feedback from their lecturers.

Students will explore what future transport – including Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and drones – can look like as they learn the fundamental concept of a transport system. Students will be exposed to the basics of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Additive Manufacturing (3D printing) technologies used in the design of AVs and drones.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• want to know more about Autonomous Vehicles and drones
• are interested in how an engineer designs components from concept to reality using CAD and 3D printing

What to expect

Students will learn Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, 3D scanning technique, and 3D printing technology to design and print their own AV, as well as the benefits of AVs in Singapore and the region. They will also get to apply their innovation skills in the classroom to design and print their own miniature vehicle for a friendly “race”! 

A hands-on module that introduces students to a range of electronic components, basic circuit design and sensors, and demonstrates how ideas for an electronic product can be translated into an actual product.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• like Design & Technology, engineering and electronics
• enjoy tinkering and making their own products
• love problem solving
• want to explore a career in engineering 

What to expect

Students will learn how ideas can be translated into real-life electronic products and will become familiar with a range of electronic components, basic circuit design and sensors. By the end of the module, they will have created a robot that can detect and track a line on the floor.

A module that introduces students to Microelectronics – the science and technology of extremely small electronics. Students will get to learn about the making of integrated circuits, which power all electronic gadgets including laptops, mobile phones and game controllers. Basic concepts about light, electricity and oxidation, etc. will come alive for students as they apply them in the fabrication of integrated circuits. 

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• understand the basic concepts of light, electricity and oxidation
• are fascinated by how electronic devices are getting smaller yet last for longer periods of time
• want to understand how we pack so much power into something so small

What to expect

Students will undergo collaborative learning activities and experiential learning sessions as well as design and simulation exercises as they work through this module. They will also have the opportunity to visit an integrated circuit fabrication facility, which will bring their learning to life and show them how their knowledge can be applied in the real world.​

A module that empowers students with general aviation knowledge and helps them develop some of the skill sets required for a range of careers in the aerospace industry. They will be involved in activities that mimic real work carried out in the aerospace industry, and will take part in collaborative and experiential learning activities designed to consolidate their learning. 

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• have a passion for aviation
• are seeking a career in the aviation industry
• wish to get a head start in acquiring the skill sets needed in the aviation industry

What to expect

Students will get to develop their computational skills, apply their new-found knowledge and demonstrate their competency through practical drone flying exercises. They will also gain first-hand experience in comparing the differences between commercial and military aircraft cockpit instrumentation.

A module designed to equip students with the fundamental concepts of naval architecture and ship design so that they acquire the knowledge to design and launch their own boat.  

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• want to design a boat and see it float
• are intrigued by the fundamental concepts of naval architecture
• want to build a career in naval architecture and ship design

What to expect

In addition to building and launching a boat of their own design, students will head out on a field trip to get insights into the exciting marine industry and learn how design is applied within the industry.

A module that gives students an insight into the different back-of-house operations that ensure smooth hotel operations and leisure facilities management 24 hours a day all year round. 

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• wish to build a career in the hospitality or leisure industry
• are intrigued as to how hotels can stay open 24 hours a day all year round and yet operate smoothly

What to expect

Students will be introduced to a “Property Management System” which all hotel receptionists work on daily. They will also experience how the engineering department works on S.A.L.T (Sound, Air, Light & Temperature), and they will get the opportunity to use different tools to measure sound and light within the room.​

​​A diverse module that provides an excellent insight into the various sectors in the tourism industry: hospitality and resorts, visitor attractions, travel, MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions), etc.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are attracted to a career in Singapore’s vibrant tourism industry
• are keen to find out how the tourism industry transformed itself to cope with the challenges of the pandemic

What to expect

Students will acquire a general understanding of the tourism industry through lesson activities that encourage exploration and co-creation of knowledge. They will get to research unique tourism experiences and products, take part in team discussions and make presentations through role-plays or skits. Through various case studies, students will also learn how the industry adapted to the Covid-19 pandemic and come to appreciate the unique factors that enable Singapore to thrive as a tourism hub for locals and tourists alike.

​A module that introduces students to modern board games (e.g. Catan, Ticket to Ride) that develop the skills of problem analysis, logical thinking and probability analysis, which can be transferred to fields like computer science and software development. Through the learnings and exercises in this module, students will get a sense of the various problem-solving and team collaboration skills required in the IT industry to help them better assess their suitability for such roles in the future.​

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in building skills in logical thinking
• are seeking a career in computer science or software development

What to expect

Students will be required to document their strategies using flow charts and pseudocode as they work through the various problem-solving and team collaboration exercises. They will also get to experience a typical system development life cycle as they design their own board game and produce a prototype.

A module that introduces students to the wonders of Virtual Reality (VR) and helps them understand the skills needed to develop such experiences for others. Exploring popular VR games, they will become familiar with what to look out for when creating these VR experiences. They will also be exposed to the process, technology, tools and software such as Unity and Adobe Photoshop.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in developing games that integrate Virtual Reality experiences
• wish to explore a career in Virtual Reality design and gaming

What to expect

Students will experience a typical VR development life cycle as they design and develop a simple mobile VR game that they can bring home and share with their family and friends. They will have hands-on experience of what it is like to be a VR Experience Designer/Game Developer.​

A module that offers students the opportunity to learn meaningful lifesaving skills through real-life scenarios.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• wish to experience day-to-day nursing care scenarios in a hospital setting through simulation labs
• want to explore a healthcare-related career 
• seek to understand the work of healthcare professionals in the holistic care of patients

What to expect

Students will learn skills such as good body mechanics for patient care, taking vital signs, blood glucose monitoring and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They will have the chance to experience nursing scenarios though simulation labs to gain a better understanding of how healthcare professionals provide holistic care to patients.

Students will learn the chemical principles and practices involved in the analysis of products we use daily, including the foods we eat, the beverages we drink, the medicines we take when we are unwell, and the plastic polymer products that we use. While some common chemistry may be obvious, this module will reveal others that surprise. 

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in how the world around us works at a cellular level
• are keen to explore a career in one of the many fields of chemistry

What to expect

Students will discover new knowledge through hands-on chemistry experiments such as chromatography and spectrophotometry which are commonly used in the industry. They will also find out more about careers in fields of chemistry through a field trip that will give them real-life insights and practical understanding.

A module that teaches students about the causes and symptoms of various eye problems. Students will also learn about eye anatomy and gain hands-on experience in constructing a pair of eyeglasses for themselves.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are seeking a career in optometry
• are curious to find out how the eye works and the science behind eye treatments
• are interested in simple mathematics, biology and physics

What to expect

Students will get the opportunity to attend a career talk and visit NP’s on-campus optometry centre to learn about possible healthcare-related career pathways in the optometry industry.

A module that introduces students to some common chronic diseases such as hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, stroke, coronary artery disease, diabetes, heart failure and asthma. They will learn the basic healthcare-related skills needed to provide basic care and manage patients with these conditions.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• wish to experience day-to-day nursing care scenarios in a hospital setting through simulation labs
• want to explore a healthcare-related career 
• seek to understand the work of healthcare professionals in the holistic care of patients

What to expect

Students will learn about the development, management and impact of chronic conditions as they gain understanding about health promotion, prevention, early intervention and the social determinants of health. They will better appreciate why certain groups of people are particularly vulnerable to certain health conditions.

A module that introduces students to illnesses that require emergency care such as heart attack (acute myocardial infarction), stroke, acute bleeds and epileptic fits. 

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• wish to experience day-to-day nursing care scenarios in a hospital setting through simulation labs
• want to explore a healthcare-related career 
• seek to understand the work of healthcare professionals in the holistic care of patients

What to expect

Students will attend a series of hands-on sessions designed to deepen their understanding of the management of emergency care. Towards the end of the module, they will get to apply the knowledge and skills learned in a simulated environment and meet real-life patients in a clinical setting.

A module that introduces students to the work that microbiologists do. Students will gain insights into the different types of bacteria in our environment and how they are used for good.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in the miniature world of micro-organisms
• are seeking a career as a microbiologist
• wish to be involved in the creation of products useful to our health

What to expect

Students will get to do the work of a microbiologist by growing, counting and studying bacteria in the lab. They will also visit a company to learn how microbes are used in the industry to give us useful products.

A module led by industry professionals who will help students discover different creative tools and experience what it is like to work in an advertising agency. Students will come to value teamwork in the creative process and take part in mini-projects to pitch ideas for a marketing campaign.

​Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• want to learn how to design marketing materials such as presentation slides and social media posts
• seek to work in the advertising or marketing industry
• wish to apply the skills of digital media production in their work
• are interested in visual communications

What to expect

Students will explore key concepts through interactive workshops and gain hands-on experience in graphic and visual design using Adobe Photoshop. They will learn through interesting activities such as an exercise to express their personality through a font type. Through such activities, their design skills will be enhanced.

A module that introduces students to the creative processes of producing sound in multimedia productions to enhance digital media content. This training will enable students to discover their hidden talent and potential, and find out whether a career in audio production is the one for them.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are interested in sound and audio techniques
• want to work in the audio aspect of multimedia production
• are intrigued by the skills needed to edit and mix sound 

What to expect

Students will work in a professional recording studio with the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to gain hands-on knowledge and practical experience as they record, edit and mix sound for a music video project. They will also learn how to use music, sound effects and voiceovers effectively to enhance multimedia presentations.

A module that introduces students to the journalism industry, including concepts such as what makes news and the newsgathering and research process. Students will also develop an understanding of how stories are told through digital media.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• have a curiosity about the world around them
• have a natural desire to ask questions and get answers
• enjoy telling stories about real people and real situations

What to expect

Students will learn how to present information in an accurate and compelling way to appeal to audiences on digital platforms and find out whether they have what it takes to be good journalist.

A module that exposes students to product design, including the thinking process and core skills such as visual thinking through sketching and the use of fundamental prototyping skills to visualise in 3D.

Who is it for?

Secondary 2 students and above who:

• are aspiring product designers
• are interested in the design practice and design thinking
• want to work in 3D design

What to expect

Students will get to take part in a design project through which they will learn the process of creating ideas, and developing, refining and validating them through prototyping to come up with a viable design.​
