School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology

Students from the Diploma in Environmental & Water Technology have been conducting Learning Trails at Sungei Ulu Pandan, where visitors will get to discover the design features and lush greenery along the river, since 2013. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, such outdoor activities have been limited or cancelled. As such, the students designed a website as a green initiative to replace the hard copy learning trail booklets, which allows for easy access using mobile devices. This digital initiative allows anyone to “explore” Sungei Ulu Pandan on their own as the world adapts to a new normal.

Dr Ron Ng and Dr Soong Junwei made history when they became the first polytechnic graduates to gain direct admission into a local medical school in 2007. Dr Ng and Dr Soong graduated with a Diploma in Biomedical Laboratory Technology* and a Diploma in Biotechnology* respectively. They subsequently applied to enter medical school at the National University of Singapore under a discretionary admissions exercise. Today, Dr Ng specialises in geriatrics while Dr Soong practises at Singapore General Hospital.

In Sept 2023, 50 students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology (NP LSCT) had the opportunity to engage in fireside chats with 3 industry experts from Craft Health, Miyoshi Limited, and Universal Landscape & Construction Ptd Ltd, where they applied empathy in understanding the challenges faced by the industry. The students were tasked to come up with their own questions to dive deeper into the problem statements and tackle the challenges through design thinking. On the final day, they pitched their solutions to industry partners, cross-disciplinary faculty members and fellow peers at Inno*space, a new student-centric space that aims to develop students into Science & Tech Innovators with industry 4.0 skillsets for a better future. The inaugural hackathon was an opportunity for LSCT students to develop an innovation & entrepreneurial (I&E) mindset, hack science & tech-related pain points and solve real challenges for organisations.​

Keen to make a difference overseas? LSCT students have travelled to countries such as Davao to serve and learn from the community. They actively participated in the construction of new teaching facilities and used creative teaching techniques to improve the local students’ English conversational skills and learning of Science. Through this exposure, our students developed a better understanding of community, teamwork and resilience.

Enviromental & Water Technology student, Year 1​

LSCT students benefited from the various enriching overseas trips to countries such as Thailand, China, Cambodia, as part of the school's Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP). Students had a chance to delve deep into the fabric of the country's culture, exploring its history, economy and community dynamics. They also visited companies related to the Life Science & Chemical Technology industry, and went on cultural excursions to iconic landmarks.​

CSIG is an event-based CCA that focuses on giving back to the community through volunteering and organizing community service events. Apart from aiming to impact the lives of the less fortunate, the elderly and the disabled by extending their helping hand, CSIG also hopes to spread awareness and encourage volunteerism in LSCT.​

A club for artistic individuals who have a passion for creating, the Design Club encourages its members to acquire new skills, flex their creative muscles and lastly to have fun making new friends in the process of learning and making many different forms of art.​

By serving as a powerful source of inspiration, GV aims to create environmental awareness among all students, alumni and members of the public through activities and workshops. Whether it is an environmental project, a collaboration partnership with an agency or NGO, or serving in a community event, GV demonstrates the values of collaboration, perseverance, and leadership.

The club aims to promote the love and passion for plants, and foster a spirit of friendship between students mutually interested in plants, horticulture, and related areas. They aim to provide a supportive environment where students can enjoy, learn, understand and work with plants.

LSCT Operatives manages and oversees outreach events like RED Camp and Open House. They also host fun bonding events as well as training programs to allow members to have the opportunity to hone their leadership and communication skills. LSCT Ops hopes to create a platform for LSCT students to forge long-lasting friendships, and gain experience through the planning, execution and leading of events.​

LSCT Society organises events to immerse students in the LSCT spirit, step into new boundaries and make new friends! Such student events include Halloween, the Freshmen Orientation Programme and many more. Along the way, students get to learn how to conduct their own camps, and experience how strangers turn into friends, and friends turn into a family.

MIG is a community of like-minded individuals who wish to explore or pursue a career in the healthcare industry. MIG provides its members with the opportunity to realise their aspirations through volunteerism, workshops, talks, competitions and mentorship.​

In YSIG, we encourage LSCT students to initiate science and innovation research projects and participate in competitions. We also organize Seminar Series where we invite current interns or alumni to share experiences with our students. We also organize our annual Science & Tech Hackathon Challenge to solve real world challenges with industry partners. With Inno*Space, students can discuss collaboratively, design their own prototypes or even pitch for their projects. We hope to inspire our students to become innovators and entrepreneurs in the future.​
